About Iwami Kagura

Iwami Kagura is a traditional performing art representing the Iwami region in western Shimane Prefecture. Currently, there are approximately 140 Kagura groups in the Iwami region, and Hamada City has the largest number of groups, over 50.
Iwami Kagura, which is said to have originated in the late Muromachi period, is characterized by the dynamic dances of dancers wearing gorgeous costumes accompanied by light music.
The easy-to-understand story of good, punishment, and evil based on mythology will entertain everyone from children to the elderly. and  Kagura is deeply integrated into the lives of people living in the area, and is performed not only as votive kagura at shrines, but also at festivals, events, regular performances, and even weddings.
